Important Information for ATM Users

Effective July 14, 2010, KU Credit Union will be part of the STAR ATM Network instead of the TransFund ATM Network. The STAR Network offers superior fraud protection.

Rest assured that your current ATM or debit card will work with any ATM, and ATMs at our branch locations will continue to be surcharge-free. However, you may incur a surcharge fee at ATMs without the STAR symbol. You will always be notified before a fee is charged.

Our Student Select, Dividend, and Gold Checking Accounts offer a $10 ATM surcharge rebate (our Advantage Checking Account offers $20) when you use your debit card ten or more times each month, and you will see the rebate on your monthly statement. As a courtesy, we will rebate surcharges from QuikTrip ATMs until 8/31/10.

Shred Fest -- Shred Your Old Sensitive Documents

Lawrence, Kan. - KU Credit Union will conduct a "Shred Fest" event Saturday, April 17, 2010, at the Credit Union's South branch, located at 2221 West 31st Street in Lawrence. The event will run from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Everyone in the community is invited to bring their old documents and computer discs that contain sensitive information and have them securely shredded. If you have questions about the Shred Fest, please call the Credit Union at 785-749-2224.

"The single most effective weapon against fraud and identity theft is an informed, educated citizen," said Ginger Wehner, VP for KU Credit Union. "Shred Fest is one of the different ways we help people in our community protect themselves against this increasing danger."

All shredding will be conducted by a professional shredding company. Participants are asked to bring only old sensitive documents and not common recycling items or newspapers.

Movin' On Up? Scholarship Winners Announced

KU Credit Union is proud to announce that $6,000 in scholarships has been awarded this year to six graduating high school seniors. Kelsey Moore and Robert “James” Hills of Bartlesville, OK, Emily Walker of Arkansas City, KS, Anna Braun of Overland Park, KS, Sarah Amelunke of The Woodlands, TX, and Brittany White of Springdale, AR, have each won a $1,000 scholarship to be used for college expenses.

In order to be qualified for the scholarship contest, students had to complete a financial quiz consisting of 24 multiple choice questions and one essay question. Winners were awarded their scholarships, if possible, at their respective high school senior awards programs.

“KU Credit Union has an interest in helping students succeed and is very pleased to be able to offer these scholarships,” said Kelly Diven, president and CEO. “Credit Unions were founded on the principle of people helping people, and we feel that this is a great way that we can help well deserving students receive the education they need to help positively impact their community.”

You've Graduated. Now what?

You’ve got the degree, a job offer, and a promising future. You’re ready to strike out on your own! For most of us, that means moving out of dear ol’ Mom and Dad’s pad and into our own. Whatever you choose, it won't be as cheap as living at home. Just how much will it cost?

Here's what to consider:

Rent. This will be a big chunk of your budget. How big depends on what situation you choose. But rent is only part of the picture.
Security deposit. This is a sum your landlord gets upfront to cover damages you cause during your tenancy. It's refundable if no damage occurs. Some landlords don't require a security deposit, but instead ask you to pay the final month's rent before you move in.
Utilities. Does your landlord pay heat, electricity and water? Or, are you responsible for these expenses? Your landlord or local utility companies can tell you how much past bills have been. Count on paying your own phone, cable and internet, at least.
Utilities deposits and hookup charges. Utility companies assess a deposit to assure you don't skip out and leave bills unpaid. Check when and how you get the deposit back. Hookup charges are fees for connecting you to the service and are nonrefundable.
And we haven't even talked about furnishings, moving expenses and rental insurance. They easily can add hundreds of dollars to the tab. As you see, renting a place costs extra cash right at the start. Plus you have ongoing monthly obligations. Keep the latter to one-third or less of your monthly income, or your new haven of independence may feel like a burden.
